«Zurich is a cycling city! Or at least it might seem so. The streets are filled with practical city bikes, some Dutch “bakfietsen” transporting two kids and, of course, vintage road bikes. A vintage from the 1970s in good state with new brakes and a Brooks leather saddle can easily cost several hundred Swiss Francs—cycling has become a lifestyle choice. Nevertheless, Zurich lags far behind other cities in Switzerland or Europe, both concerning the number of cyclists and the quality of its cycling infrastructure.»

«All in all, Zurich is not yet a very cyclist friendly city. The City Planning and Engineering Departments are making great efforts to improve the overall network, and are planning a number of projects of larger scale. Both the small and the larger scale projects will take years to implement. The cycling culture will grow and expand, but cycling uphill in snowy conditions will remain a matter for the—say—enthusiastic.»
